Biarritz

Biarritz (Pyrenees Atlantique department) – this is a popular seaside town located in France’s southwest, along the Bay of Biscay – within 40 minutes driving distance of the Spanish border. This is a major town within France’s Basque Country (which extends southward into Spain, which becomes “Pais Vasco”). Biarritz was known as a resort town as far back as the 19th century when Napoleon III and his Spanish-born wife Eugénie vacationed there regularly (they even had their own palace there – Hôtel du Palais). Along with beach vacationers that Biarritz still attracts today, the coastal waves here (known as some of Europe’s best), draws in legions of surfers as well.
