Biarritz Surf Festival

Biarritz Surf Festival

Biarritz Surf Festival (various beaches within Biarritz) – this is one of Europe’s major surfing events, which is fitting, since this regional coastal town is known as the surfing capital of the continent. This one-week event (held every July) consists of longboard contests, paddle board racing, demonstrations of tandem surfing, Tahitian pirogue, bodysurfing, as well as other thrilling water activities.

Surf culture can be found throughout Biarritz’s coastline. Major surf brands like Quiksilver and O’Neill have offices, shops and events in this area. Even American screenwriter Peter Viertel (who had portions of the 1956 Hollywood film “The Sun Also Rises” shot here) was said to be responsible for introducing California surf culture to France. In addition, one must not forget that the French have their own version of Hawaii: Tahiti (French Polynesia) – another popular international outpost of surfing.
