Nice (Alpes Maritimes département) – for those flying into the South of France (Côte D’Azur), especially during the Spring when festivities, such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix (and the VIP parties held at these and other nearby locations), the coastal city of Nice (the fifth largest in France) acts as the gateway to this internationally popular part of the country. Nice also has popular beaches – including those by the seaside boulevard Promenade des Anglais (which runs along the Avenue de la Californie). Due to its proximity to Italy (30 minutes by car), the local cuisine has a distinct Italian influence. Nice also has its own carnival festivities in February, which is one of the oldest in existence (going back to the 13th century), and is not to be missed. rder.
